| | | This work reconstructs the climate of the period and historic events in the life of Countess Matilde of Canossa and the fights for supremacy between papacy and empire in around 1100. The photographer works like a photo director, as opposed to a film director, creating a fantastically realistic imaginary Middle Ages. The pictures, which could be defined as photo paintings, have been created by manipulation. Using single images, the photographer has created paintings from his imagination, turning simple participants at traditional pageants, or rather standardised historic processions, into actors in a personal story with a medieval flavour, placing them in an imaginary setting of landscapes, castles and fortresses from the age of Matilde. |
